Schools / assemblies are intensive, ephemeral, subject-specific curatorial projects that last between one and three days and take place in (collaboration with) a hosting institution. They are rooted in the Winter Schools that I curated at Tanzquartier Wien during the artistic direction of Bettina Kogler. They are the result of a practice that could be termed “diasporic curating”: bringing people – and the concepts and words they carry – together in unlikely encounters, proposing that sense needs to be made not here or there but in-between, looking for resonances between seemingly disparate ideas, translating thought into moments experienced in specific contexts with other people in an exercise of doykayt.
Future Playground (2025, Tanzquartier Wien, 2-day format): inspired by the semi-fictional universe of play, a mix of artistic research, game design, legal theory, DJing and more, asking how shifting our conceptions of time might allow critical visions of the future.
What now? Strategies of Entanglement (2025, Tanzquartier Wien, 2-day format): four working sessions hosted by cultural professionals from Vienna and Eastern Europe, asking how rising pressures on the cultural field can be addressed in relation to other realms of life affected by ongoing political deterioration.
Don’t trace no lines: practices of diaspora (2025, Tanzquartier Wien, 2-day format): workshops, film screenings, discussions and concerts exploring performative, embodied, discursive practices of diaspora and articulating the urgent necessity of the in-between.
Dance Class (2024, Tanzquartier Wien, 3-day format): workshops, conferences, lectures, discussions, performances and DJ sets on class/ism in the performing arts.
Tress_passing (2024, Tanzquartier Wien, 1-day format): experimental gathering at the crossover of Passover seder and contemporary performance, exploring artistic research practices on critical, intersectional, diasporic Jewishness.
A little bit further down and to the side (2023, Tanzquartier Wien, 3-day format): workshops, symposia, discussions and more on dance and performance in Southern and Eastern Europe and the Mediterranean.
